Our economies and societies will be shaped by major trends in the coming years. Aging, climate change, globalisation and digitalisation will impact the way Europeans live, work, interact and do business.
These mega-trends will have a significant impact on taxation – challenging previously stable sources of revenue and offering new opportunities for public income. At the same, taxation will have a substantial contribution to make in responding to these new and emerging challenges, as well as to supporting the green and digital transitions.
This is why the European Commission launched the Tax Symposium in 2022 in Brussels - a high-level event to reflect on the right tax mix for the EU over the next 20-30 years.
In 2023, the Tax Symposium returns to Brussels for a 1.5 day event on 24 October (afternoon only) in the SQUARE – Brussels Convention Centre and 25 October 2023 (full day) in the European Parliament. The European Parliament and the European Commission will co-host this second edition, under the theme “The future of taxation in the EU: Challenges ahead & changes needed”.
In 2025, the EU Tax Symposium took place on 18 March in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament in Brussels. Under the theme of "Strengthening competitiveness and fairness to build prosperity”, the event brought together finance ministers, Members of the European Parliament and National Parliaments, policymakers, academics and civil society to discuss the future of tax systems in the EU.
In 2026 the fourth edition returns to a 1-5-day format under the headline “The future of taxation: inequality and growth in the global economy”. The programme will include ministers, senior policymakers, academics and Nobel Prize winners. Keynotes and panels will explore the link between tax, prosperity and fairness. How can taxation boost competitiveness and unlock economic potential? What does fairness look like in a changing world?

The EU Tax Symposium 2025 will take place in Brussels on 18 March. High level speakers, panellists and participants will discuss "The future of taxation in the EU: Strengthening competitiveness and fairness to build prosperity".

From the afternoon of 24 October to 25 October 2023, the European Parliament and the European Commission will co-host the second EU Tax Symposium, with the theme "The future of taxation in the EU: challenges ahead & changes needed".
